Term 2 Newsletter
CEO Message

Wow! Can you believe it’s already the beginning of term 2? They say time flies when you’re having fun and that has certainly been the case for e.motion21’s start to 2017.
A major highlight of term 1 was Moverthon fundraising, culminating in a fantastic community event on World Down Syndrome Day. It was lovely to catch up with so many of you on the day and to see one and all lending a hand to ensure the smooth-running of the event. Thanks to everyone involved, e.motion21 now holds the Guinness World Record for Most people drumming on a swiss ball simultaneously.

We are also very proud to report that, through all your fundraising efforts, we were able to bring in over $19K for the organisation. The money raised will support us in our work with young Australians with Down syndrome to experience health, fitness and belonging through our specialised dance and fitness programs.

As we move into the new term, there are some exciting announcements to make! Firstly, we would like to welcome Inbar Niv who will be joining us shortly as the new Artistic Director. We’re also thrilled to welcome Daniella Bebb who has joined us in the capacity of Dance Teacher and Event Manager and will start teaching classes in term 2. Thank you to the teachers who have been teaching these classes over time.

Speaking of exciting announcements, there are some wonderful projects in the pipeline. We’re currently in conversation with both Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Arts Melbourne to plan some significant collaborations. Watch this space for more news on those projects!

Over to news on the National Disability Insurance (NDIS) front, e.motion21 is currently undergoing an independent service standards audit. This process serves to ensure we are meeting our commitment to best practice in service delivery and compliance with both state and federal legislation. During the audit, our auditors (Quantum Certification Services) will be required to interview participants, families, staff and other stakeholders 16 and 17 May. More information regarding this stage of the audit will be coming out shortly.

Thank you to those of you who responded to our online survey, in partnership with Deakin University and Helen Macpherson Smith Trust to assess the impact of having our programs in leisure centres. We will be publishing the findings in the coming weeks on the e.motion21 website. One strongly recurring theme in your responses was the desire for a location for parents to sit together and socialise while their child attended classes. The feedback we received helps us to make informed decisions about our programs and we are grateful to those who took the time.

As the weather starts getting colder, let’s keep warm by moving bodies moving boundaries. I hope you have a wonderful term 2 everyone!

Warm regards,
Karina

Volunteer Training
We are holding Volunteer training for new Volunteers on Tuesday 16 April, 6:30pm at our office in Kew. Please email linda.kinnersly@emotion21.org.au if you would like to attend this training.
Pilot Programs
Mini Movers
We’re excited to announce a new pilot program specially designed for the youngest members of our community with Down syndrome. Run in a “mummy & me” format, children aged 3 to 4 years will dance alongside their parent/caregiver, allowing opportunities for special caregiver/child bonds to be extended and caregivers to be included in the fun! Pending minimum enrolments, sessions will begin from Tuesday 2 May (10 – 10:30am) at Hawthorn Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

Holiday Programs
In an effort to keep the dancing and fitness going all year long, we would love to run some school holiday workshops during the winter term break (1 July – 16 July), with a view to continue running workshops both during school holidays and throughout the term. To ensure these programs target the specific goals and interests of our participants, we have created a survey to gauge interest. Please click here to fill it out!
Love dancing in the spotlight!? Join our NEW Saturday dance class, 11-12pm at Villa Maria Kew (starting 22 April), to learn awesome routines and have the opportunity to perform them at multiple community events across Metro Melbourne!  This class is open to all e.motion21 participants aged 10 years plus who love to dance and want to do more of it!
Our first Bendigo Beat Fit™ community class at Dahlia Festival!
NDIS Roll Out
Term 2 sees the NDIS reach our participants at our Bendigo site.  While the benefits of the NDIS are great, the transition process can be challenging. We still find that our participants and families/carers need to advocate strongly for themselves in planning meetings to attain the supports they desire.  To support families, e.motion21 works behind the scenes liaising with Local Area Coordinators as well as the NDIA itself.  Make sure you download our NDIS Fact Sheet by clicking here.

Our NDIS Project Officer, Sarah Marshall is also here to help (0439 144 360/ sarah.marshall@emotion21.org.au )
We are thrilled to announce our Bendigo site will be moving to the beautiful Ulumbarra Theatre, Wednesday 3 May!
Libby Petty, what do you encounter at e.motion21?
Fun! Laughter! Warmth! And by far some of the best dancers I've ever had the pleasure of dancing alongside.
Most memorable moment?
The Moverthon has to be the most memorable moment for me so far. To watch so many young adults and children come together in one place with one purpose (and so much enjoyment) was beautiful and an absolute pleasure to be part of.
Childhood dream?
My childhood dream is a split one. I so badly wanted to be a vet and look after sick animals. I also wanted to be a 'Snowflake on the stage' in the Nutcracker.
Passion / interests?
Travel and dance! I have been extremely lucky when it comes to travel and am currently in Thailand as we speak!
Performance Company Auditions
HUGE congratulations to everyone who auditioned for our Performance Company! We were thrilled with the extremely high calibre of dancers who attended - you all should be very proud of your efforts.

The Performance Company will begin rehearsing Saturdays 9.30-11am, starting 22 April at Villa Maria Kew.
Welcome Inbar and Daniella!
We welcome Inbar as our new qualified Artistic Director starting 18 April. Inbar is the founder and director of The Yellow Dance Spot. She has developed and delivered programs for the NGV, Artplay, Royal Botanic Gardens & Heide MOMA amongst others.
Daniella has recently joined our team as both the Event Manager and a Dance Teacher. Holding a Bachelor of Performing Arts and a Diploma of Children’s Services, Daniella infuses her practice with both a passion for dance and refined understanding of childhood development and pedagogy.

Daniella will be teach the following e.motion21 classes term 2
Geelong:
Primary, Hip-hop & Adults
Kew: Tweens, Tap & Teens (on occasion)
Highett: Primary & Teens/Adults
Greensborough: Beat Fit™ & Adults

Thank you to the teachers who have been teaching these classes over time. This is a change in our operating model and is in no way a reflection of the performance of these teachers.

Raising The Bar

We are delighted to share with you that our documentary Raising The Bar is doing extremely well on the International Documentary Film Circuit, collecting several awards to date! We look forward to screening the film in Melbourne again soon.

This recognition supports our work in Moving Boundaries as we aim for mass distribution of the film in India, Australia and beyond! It is our wish that audiences viewing this documentary and the incredible human beings in it, will experience a transformation.
